In 2011, there were a total of 2,992 perinatal deaths in Australia - 2,220 fetal (at birth with minimum 20 weeks gestation) and 772 neonatal (within 4 weeks of birth). This is at a rate of 9.9 per 1000 births - or put another way 8.2 babies per day, every single day of the year. There were 1,140 infant deaths in 2011 http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/3302.0 – so taking off the neonatal deaths, there were an extra 368 infants between (1-12 months) … 3360 deaths up to age 1 … 9.21 per day
