Dilation and Curettage (D&C)

A Dilation and Curettage (D&C) refers to the dilation (widening/opening) of the cervix and surgical removal of part of the lining of the uterus and/or contents of the uterus by scraping and scooping (curettage). D&C procedures are usually carried out for missed and incomplete miscarriages.

A (D&C) may be performed to speed up your miscarriage or if your situation requires that you have to have one. This process is rather quick and means that you will be in and out of the hospital or surgery within a few hours.

Ask questions

  • What does this procedure involve?
  • How long will the procedure go for?
  • How long will I bleed for?
  • How long should I wait before trying again?

Things to consider

  • Organising time off work
  • Organising your other children to be looked after
  • Having someone there for you before and after the procedure- someone to drive you home
  • If you want to see your baby or take your baby home for a special memorial service, you may wish to discuss with your doctor having a natural miscarriage rather than a D&C.

After the D&C

Most women bleed for five to 10 days following a D&C. Contact your doctor if you experience:

* Prolonged or heavy bleeding
* Blood clots or strong abdominal pain
* Changes in your vaginal discharge
* Fever or flu-like symptoms
